Underground Hydrogen Storage

Building the Next Generation of Underground Hydrogen Storage

A European research initiative developing safe, adaptable, and cost-effective lined rock cavern systems.

What is HyCavern?

HyCavern develops and validates a next-generation underground hydrogen storage system based on lined rock caverns (LRCs), combining engineered lining systems, advanced materials and real-time safety monitoring to ensure safe long-term storage at industrial scale.

Underground hydrogen storage
Stores hydrogen in mined, lined rock caverns deep underground.
Scalable and replicable
Designed to be economically viable and repeatable across multiple sites.
Advanced materials
Uses innovative coatings, concrete, and sliding layers to enhance durability.
Lined rock cavern (LRC) concept
Combines steel and concrete lining with the surrounding rock mass to manage pressure.
Geologically adaptable
Applicable across different rock types and locations in Europe.
Built-in safety monitoring
Integrates sensors and monitoring systems for long-term safety control.

Hydrogen Needs Storage. Europe Needs Scale.

Europe’s transition to a hydrogen-based energy system requires large-scale underground storage solutions capable of balancing renewable variability and industrial demand. However, current storage options are geographically limited, technically constrained, and not easily replicable across diverse geological conditions.
